East Lothian - and a little Midlothian
As a tourist guide might say: Aberlady Bay offers a fine example of the quality sunsets that
East Lothian has to offer
The final page of this tour, of the eastern half of southern Scotland, has some shots from East Lothian, the county to the north of The Borders. These photos are a little unashamedly dominated by sunsets - this might seem a little surprising for an eastern region, but East Lothian projects north into the Firth of Forth and, with its dry fine climate, often offers magnificent ends to the day - below a sunrise is also slipped in. The
Pentland Hills
are actually in Midlothian, but, as has already been seen from the Peebles page, they draw attention from much further afield and are included below.
At the other end of the year a gate which offers brightness in the drab early spring
Late August and the purple of the heather takes over the Moorfoot Hills
Back to the Aberlady Bay area for a sunset which, despite its warm colours,
still conjurs the winter that it was
A fine barn in the east of the county testifies to the relative wealth of agriculture in the area
Not far from Longniddrie, a late summer's day has allowed the hay to be bailed
Two Moorfoot roads, the one above is deep in the hills to the west of Heriot...
...And here another road sweeps round on the way to Peebles, allowing a fuller appreciation of the Moorfoots
But staying away from the coast in East Lothian is hard. This old skeleton, of an unidentifiable structure, threatens to eat the Cockenzie power station - when it still had a chimney
A more familiar relic - a boat trolley, and two people with space
While these gulls and waders have rather little space
A village sign near Pencaitland...
And another winter sunset with the cold mist gathering on a December afternoon
Warmer summer days, see the yachts out along the East Lothian coast
A beach jogger and that power station again...
...the chimney alone. It was peacefully(!) blown up in 2015
Crossing briefly into Midlothian, sun descending...
...on the Pentland Hills. And some colder light...
...offering winter beauty
Looking back from Arthur's Seat, in Edinburgh, at the sun rising over East Lothian -
and the power station, dimly, trying to take centre stage
