Quốc Lộ 32 - Selfies and a Jeep

Monitors can keep the layout, which phones may need to discombobulate.

Han leaning out of Jeep waving, lake and mountains behind. Welcome to our Jeep - which we bought in 2008 Jeep apparently parked in a stream. It was used for a number of years to take... Jeep parked on hill overlooking valley and hills. ...visitors around northern Vietnam - including along Route 32 While Picture Posting has allowed occasional visitors to wander into the photographs of northern Vietnam, these appearances are usually marginal. This page turns away from the scenery and local people to a selection of photos, still taken on Route 32, but of the
people normally
behind the camera.
First some portraits
of our Jeep which
was involved in a
number of trips on
Quốc Lộ 32.
Jeep on road with line of karst hills behind. An ideal vehicle for feeling in contact with the places visited Driver and wheel, man standing outside. The driver and bystander contemplating a hold-up - one glove is better than none in an open vehicle Bonnet and windscreen of Jeep, glass almost opaque with reflections. Old Jeeps (American War cast offs!) are repairable in the smallest of communities with minimal tools Jeep parked on rough ground man and woman standing beside it. Two customers from the UK - Barbara and Ian - on a December outing Girl walking with three beers on a tray. Hà Nội beer for the travellers - but only three bottles, someone was abstaining... Han standing by a table with two people sitting, counting off on his fingers. ...As it wasn't me, maybe it is driver Hân who is here reciting the menu choices while waiting for the beer at this small restaurant Table with food and single gas ring with large vessel on it. Han holding up an item. Another restaurant along Route 32 and a Vietnamese favourite dish - hot pot. For this meal the food is cooked on the customers' table, here in the pan on the blue gas burner Woman standing on low narrow banking holding selfie stick with phone, country beyond. Hân's wife, Duyên, precariously perched taking a selfie, with a tea planation in the background Han in hat holding up camera to take photo f himself, tongue out. Early selfies - 2007 - often seemed to require grimaces of this sort... Man with phone on selfie stick in amongst plants taking photo of woman in amongst plants. ...later ones seem to require plunging into crops Courtyard with vehicle and man taking photo of woman looking back at building facade. Leaving the hotel - 'Where we stayed' shot Man and woman laughing amongst plants. This is ridiculous Man taking photo of woman amongst flowering plants. Getting immersed in the countryside Woman looking at phone beside table, man looking out window Catching up on the phone Man taking photo with phone on selfie stick of two women sitting on bank looking down valley. The 'Selfie Stick' not being used for selfies... Couple amongst tea plants taking photo of themselves with selfie stick. ...and being used for selfies in a tea plantation.     Next to a photographer, a selfie taker: Woman sitting on bank taking picture of herself with selfie stick. Man taking photo of two women standing together on hillock, misty hills behind. Phone as conventional camera to capture a local woman, posing with Hân's wife Duyên Han and Duyen both holding phones and both looking at her phone - reflected in table top. And then there is the review of the day's takings Western man leaning towards group of slightly perplexed looking children. Finally a meeting seen before. What's he saying? Boy opening book while others watch. 'Here's our English book - let's see if this helps' Boys looking at book, girl at man, all puzzled. 'Not a chance.' All that work and books, and we don't understand a thing, neither does he understand any of our wonderful English
